Micho’z is a family-owned Lebanese grill bringing authentic flavor to San Diego. The refreshed brand identity and website positioned the restaurant for growth, connecting tradition with a modern dining experience while strengthening its digital presence.

Owner Micho, born and raised in Beirut, Lebanon, had only lived in the US for about a year when he took the risk of opening in the same space. With a lifelong culinary background and passion for creating an authentic Lebanese dining experience, he set out to do what the previous restaurant could not—bring genuine, heartfelt Lebanese cuisine to Hillcrest, crafted exactly as if you were eating in Lebanon.

My role was to develop a complete identity system and brand presence from the ground up, covering the logo, signage, menus (in-house and to-go), business cards, website, social media presence, and marketing collateral. I also consulted on the interior aesthetic to ensure the brand extended into the physical space.

Differentiate Micho’z from direct competitors in the Middle Eastern category.

Distance the brand from the unsuccessful history of the location.

At a time when many restaurants in the area were chasing modern, upscale aesthetics, I took the opposite approach. The goal was to make Micho’z feel like an old, family-owned institution that had been a neighborhood fixture for decades.

The experience needed to start the moment someone approached the patio—before they even sat down. Every detail had to feel as warm, authentic, and welcoming as walking into a restaurant in Beirut.

I researched established, decades-old restaurants across Lebanon, studying their visual cues: hand-painted menu boards, brick walls, weathered wood shelving, vintage photography, and warm color palettes. The brand identity needed to blend those cues with a scalable, professional system adaptable to print, digital, and environmental applications.

Typography choices referenced classic restaurant signage, paired with colors rooted in Lebanese culture (deep greens, bold reds). The cedar tree—iconic in Lebanese heritage—was embedded within the “O” of the wordmark to give the logo an immediate, ownable connection to its roots.

Design Execution

• Logo: Custom wordmark with a cedar tree inside the “O,” bold sans serif for legibility, balanced with warm curves for approachability.
• Color palette: Rich green and red inspired by the Lebanese flag, supported by warm neutrals to balance vibrancy.
• Menus & collateral: In-house and to-go menus with a consistent header style, logo lockup, and typographic hierarchy for readability.
• Signage: Exterior signage designed for high visibility from the street, paired with smaller menu boards styled after traditional Lebanese cafés.
• Interior styling: Sourced used tables, chairs, and distressed shelving. Imported authentic framed art, shelving, and décor directly from Lebanon. Lighting choices mimicked the ambiance of a classic family restaurant.
• Digital presence: Website and social media branding consistent with the physical experience, focusing on high-quality photography of dishes and the restaurant interior.

Production & Collaboration

Worked directly with the owner to source authentic Lebanese décor and artifacts. Partnered with local sign fabricators for exterior and interior signage production. Coordinated with a web developer for final website build, ensuring design integrity. Managed print vendors for menus, business cards, and marketing collateral.

Results

The authentic brand approach resonated immediately.

• Average 5% monthly growth in the first year
• 77% increase in year two
• 4.8 stars from 435 Google reviews
• Strong local word-of-mouth with walk-in customers commenting “I didn’t know this was here” and stopping to dine after noticing the visual style
• Owner now exploring a second location for expansion

Reflection

Designing for cultural authenticity is not just about symbols—it is about understanding and translating lived experiences into visual form. The brand’s success reinforced that creating a space and identity that feels “lived in” can stand out in a sea of sterile, modern competitors.

If expanded to future locations, the brand system can easily scale while maintaining the unique character that makes Micho’z memorable.

Saad truly captured the soul of Lebanon in our brand. The logo, the colors, the entire look—it all feels so personal and authentic. Working with him was an absolute joy, and I wouldn’t trust anyone else with our brand.
